Step By Step

Dance is the movement of the body, usually to music or a rhythm. In dance you move your body in different ways that are fun and enjoyable. Dance allows you to compose your own dance sequences and create your own dance movements. Dance involves locomotor and non-locomotor movements.
Non-locomotor Dance Movements
Moving only certain parts of your body such as arms, feet and legs. This includes swaying, swinging, twisting and turning.
Locomotor Dance Movements
Dance movements that involves moving your whole body. This includes walking, running, galloping, hopping, sliding, skipping and marching.

There are many different styles of dance. Some of these include:
Folk dance
Social dance
Aboriginal dance
Contemporary dance
Bush dance
Ballroom dancing
Ballet, Tap and Jazz

  1. Dynamics: How we move your body. You can move your body smoothly to the music or sharply. You can move straight forward or backwards or you can zigzag around.
  2. Time: When we move our body. This is if we move our body really fast or really slow to the music.  
  3. Space: Where we move our body. This is the space we have to dance in and our own personal space.
  4. Relationships: Who we move our body with. You can dance by yourself, with a partner, in small groups or in large groups.
  5. Structure: How we organise the dance. This is how the dance is formed and the type of movements in the dance.
